Since the current US administration took office the EU and US have been navigating an unusually turbulent period in their relationship marked by frequent threats to introduce new and heightened tariffs and counter-tariffs, the US President’s overt cheerleading for Brexit, and the dispute over the role of Huawei products in the infrastructure of various Member States. As recently as April 9th, echoing rhetoric similar to that aimed at China, Trump tweeted that “The EU has taken advantage of the U.S. on trade for many years”, threatening a further escalation of prior disputes.
To shed light into the immediate future of relations between the world’s largest trading blocs, the European Chamber is delighted to be joined by the former US Ambassador the EU, His Excellency Anthony Gardner. Through his roles on the advisory boards of the Centre for European Reform, the German Marshall Fund and the European Policy Centre, he remains an influential figure in European policy circles. During this seminar, Ambassador Gardner will consider where China fits into this tripartite equation and share his take on topics more closely relating to European business interests, including Europe’s engagement with the Belt and Road Initiative, the development of an investment screening mechanism, and the revival of calls for a new European industrial policy.
