One of the mottoes of the new Commission under the auspices of President Ursula Von der Leyen has been to “strive for more at home in order to lead in the world”. Throughout the new leadership’s 100 first days, a number of road-maps that will likely pave the way of Europe’s strategic development and global positioning in the next five years have been developed. Looking at EU-China cooperation and competition, perhaps two of the most relevant road-maps devised by the new Commission are its Artificial Intelligence (AI) White Paper – released on 19th February – and its industrial strategy – rolled out on 10th March.
The White Paper on AI, open for consultation at the moment, aims to ensure that Europe’s innovation capabilities are boosted while establishing clear and defined regulations for so-called high-risk applications. Meanwhile, the industrial strategy looks at boosting different aspects of the single market – including digital services, 6G, Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) etc. – while contributing to the EU’s climate goals. At the same time, the strategy looks at ensuring a level-playing field in the single market through addressing issues like foreign investments, participation of companies in public tenders and subsidy policies. What is clear is that these two documents are set to have a far-reaching impact not only on the EU’s standing vis-à-vis global powers like China and the US but also on European businesses, both within the single market and in their external operations.
The European Chamber is thus delighted to invite you to join us on our upcoming webinar, where Mr Eric Badiqué, Adviser for Artificial Intelligence at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology and Mr Frank Schmiedel, First Counsellor for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs at the Delegation of the EU to China will discuss these two recently published documents on AI and industrial policy. The webinar will take place on Monday, 16th March from 16:00 to 17:30 (Beijing Time) via Zoom, and will be moderated by European Chamber Secretary General Adam Dunnett.
This webinar will be off the record.
