Can drawing upon past experiences from the world’s former Titans of Trade help tell us where we are going? It’s been twenty years since the Chamber was created at the suggestion of then EU Trade Commissioner and later WTO Director General Pascal Lamy. While China’s entry into the WTO generated a rush of investment and a boom in trade, it was not without a barrage of challenges that former Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström faced on a daily basis from trade disputes that resulted in the demise of certain European industries that led to unprecedented protests in the streets of Brussels. However, despite all of these challenges, some European companies, such as BASF, have managed to still prosper and even double down on the China market. As countries look increasingly inward and the multilateralism comes under threat, what can the European trade stalwarts advise us on the new issues of today? How can systemic rivals still remain friendly competitors and reliable partners? Will the old concerns of subsidies and regulatory barriers be muted by new ones of cyber-security, state-sponsored investment, and corporate take-overs. Against a bleak economic outlook where is decoupling most and least likely to occur?
