Universal Exposition or Expo is the third largest event in the world in terms of economic and cultural impact, after the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games. They have been organized for more than one and a half centuries — longer than both the (modern) Olympic Games and the World Cup. Since the first Expo London held in 1951, they have in one way or another, influenced the development of society impacting on international trade and relations, art, tourism and even education.
The main attractions at Expo are the national pavilions, created by participating countries. So far, the European Commission and 27 Member States all have confirmed their participation at the World Expo 2010 Shanghai. More particularly, the decision of the European Commission, which is breaking the normal policy of not participating to a World Expo outside of the EU, reflects the importance attached by the Commission to the strategic partnership between the EU and China.
The theme of Expo 2010 Shanghai will be "Better City – Better Life" and signifies the city's new status as a major economic and cultural center. It is expected to generate the largest number of visitors in the history of world fairs. The site of the event is the Nanpu Bridge-Lupu Bridge region in the center of Shanghai along both sides of the Huangpu River, covering 5.28 km². Massive construction of new metro lines has been undertaken in recent years in order to serve the sheer mass of people for this event.
Given the current global economic downturn, how can the Expo 2010 Shanghai help restore confidence and be seen as a stepping stone to further strengthen the connections and cooperations between EU-China? What would be the potential opportunities for European companies to promote their know-how, technology, products and services?
The EUCCC is pleased to invite Dr. Xu Bo, Assistant Commissioner General of World Expo 2010 Shanghai China, to present an updated picture of Expo 2010 preparations and planning. Dr.Xu's presentation will also cover introductions on foreign company's possible commercial involvements, including details on options of sponsorship, parameters of criteria and procedures. The latest information and insights will serve to help companies, interested and/or convinced to embrace the Expo 2010, obtain a better understanding an authoritative insider's perspective.
Key Points to be covered:
