The turnaround for the shipbuilding industry in 2021 sat a record after years of slow performance, with orders exceeding the last cycle boom in 2007. China has taken the number-one spot in shipbuilding, overtaking South Korea for annual order volume by compensated gross tons (CGT), according to data released in December 2021 by Clarksons. Over the span of the year, China's shipbuilders raked in orders totaling about 22.8 million CGT, almost exactly 50 % of the global total of 45.7 million.
Meanwhile, the debate continues about the environmental performance of LNG as a marine fuel and its longer-term prospects, decarbonisation process using alternative fuels and implementation of effective ESG strategies. Decarbonisation of shipping is gaining traction among Chinese policy makers and shipbuilders. Yet China lacks a concrete roadmap for decarbonisation of its maritime sector and pilot projects remain at a small scale.
Decoupling and tougher trade measures from mainly the US and the EU towards China, also have an impact on foreign companies’ strategies in China for 2022.
At this meeting, Mr. Stephen Gordon, Managing Director at Clarkson’s Research will provide members with a global market outlook identifying both risks and opportunities for members in China for the coming year, followed by a brief discussion on working group priorities for H1, including topics of the Maritime Manufacturing & Industrial Services Position Paper 2022/2022.
