According to data from Xinhua News, China’s gross ocean product increased by 8.3 percent in 2021 to more than 1.41 trillion U.S. dollars. The figure contributes 8 percent of the country’s gross domestic product expansion, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources. Taking marine transportation as an example, the cargo and container throughput at coastal ports reports year-on-year growth of 5.2 percent and 6.4 percent, respectively. Overall, liner shipping, petrochemicals, shipbuilding, coastal tourism, marine electronics and other maritime sectors all maintain strong growth as China recovers from the pandemic and implements policies to stimulate consumption and help enterprises tide over difficulties.
With ocean industries being a strong driving force behind the country’s economic growth, business opportunities are to be discovered by companies. Zhoushan city has the highest contribution of the maritime economy to the city’s GDP among prefecture-level cities across China, with over 65% of its GDP from ocean sectors. The local government aims to build a modern ocean city focusing on high quality development of its maritime industries. The European Chamber is honoured to invite the Zhoushan Municipal Government and Investment Promotion Centre to brief the latest development of maritime economy, the city’s supportive policies, and further opportunities for foreign companies in China.
