Throughout the past few years, the EU has been revamping its regulatory toolbox in order to better address emerging economic, geopolitical, technological and climate challenges. This expanding toolbox includes instruments aiming at combatting economic distortions and creating a level-playing field in the Single Market, ensuring reciprocity with third countries in areas like procurement and combatting coercive actions initiated by those countries, fostering sustainable processes and preventing carbon leakage among industry players. As a number of these regulations will impact the China operations of European companies, the European Chamber brings to you the Interpreting the EU’s Toolbox Series, where experts will provide an overview of the instruments that are being rolled out.
The fifth episode of the series will focus on the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), which was given a green light by both the European Parliament and the Council of the EU in April and May this year respectively. The CSDDD mandates companies of more than 1,000 employees with a turnover of more than EUR450 million to conduct due diligence across their entire supply chains to mitigate adverse impacts of their activities on human rights and environmental protection. The European Chamber, together with the European Business Association Worldwide Network (EBOWWN) collected input from member companies in order to develop a consolidated industry Position Paper that provides recommendations to the EU on implementation of this Directive. Please find the Position Paper here.
On Thursday 20th June at 15:30, Zsofia Kerecsen, a representative from the European Commission's DG JUST will provide an online overview of the CSDDD, which will be followed by a presentation by Herbert Smith Freehills Partner Antony Crockett on how to approach compliance with this regulation in China.
