The European Union Chamber of Commerce in China is delighted to invite you to an exclusive breakfast seminar with Patrick Honohan, the Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland . Join us on August 18th at the China World Hotel for this exclusive opportunity to hear from one of the key players in Europe’s response to the financial crisis.
Addressing the topic ‘Banks and the budget - Lessons from Europe’, Governor Honohan will talk about the debt crisis affecting Ireland and the EU, outline the measures that have been taken by the Irish government and Central Bank and discuss the short and long-term implications of the crisis for Europe and emerging markets like China.
In the wake of the financial crisis, countries across Europe are struggling to cope with their growing national debt. Ireland was one of the worst hit Eurozone countries with a daunting budget deficit of 14% and growing unemployment. Last year, Ireland undertook some of the Eurozone’s toughest spending cuts, bailed out banks and established a national “bad bank” scheme. As a result, the country has largely avoided the market speculation that has afflicted other debt-laden countries, and Ireland’s fiscal discipline and tough reforms are being examined as a model for recovery in other European countries.
Under Governor Honohan, the Irish Central Bank has been at the forefront of these reforms, ensuring that Ireland remains competitive and that the public debt is sustainable.
