The European Union Chamber of Commerce in China is delighted to announce that the autumn session of the Insight China Seminar 2010 series will be held on 16th September at the Kerry Center Hotel in Beijing.
Insight China is the European Chamber’s quarterly Macro Economic Seminar. Each quarter we invite three leading economists to share their views and opinions on current trends in the Chinese economy. As China’s economic growth steams ahead, recently outstripping Japan to become the world’s second largest economy, it seems that its economic growth and development cannot be stopped.
From exports to monetary policy: Is China's future crippled by imbalances?
Last July, Chinese exports surged and import gains slowed, bringing about a record trade surplus hike to USD 28.7 billion. The strong Chinese economy has spurred the global economic recovery over the past few months. However, increasing of political pressure from the United States and Europe over its exchange rate policy and over the debt of some of its banking institutions signals macro-economic imbalances.
Already, Premier Wen has sent out several warning signals, recently declaring that Chinese economy is “unbalanced, uncoordinated, and unsustainable.” The international community increasingly points its finger at the Chinese currency, pegged on the dollar, as being the cause of their negative trade account with China. Would an economy based on exports be sustainable, when consumption and aggregate demand in China remain sluggish? Would a more flexible exchange rate and corrections on the interest rate help China to overcome its imbalances?
Join us on September 16th and hear from
Xiao Geng,
Yifan Hu and
Louis Kuijs on how China could cope with this complex situation.
