The European Chamber of Commerce, AmCham-China and Benelux chamber of commerce in China, together with Ashoka are proud to host leading social entrepreneur and Ashoka Fellow, Jack Sim, who will discuss how he combined business opportunity with serving the sanitary needs of millions of poor people. With his World Toilet Organization, Jack has orchestrated a global campaign to tackle the lack of sanitation for 2.6 billion people worldwide. Utilizing market forces to create a demand for better toilets, Jack is beginning to transform a dysfunctional market for sanitation into a full, dynamic, beneficial one. Jack also creates public awareness about the issue through various large-scale events-including the World Toilet Summit and World Toilet Day. Jack’s vision is to create the equivalent of an IKEA for the poor in sanitation products. In this talk, Jack will use his business case of sanitation to exemplify that if you are innovative, it is possible to align your business with social values. Innovative business models can enable various industries e.g. agriculture, financial service, healthcare etc. to access a huge untapped market of the poor while solving social issues.
Ashoka’s intro:
Ashoka is the largest global association of the world’s leading social entrepreneurs — innovators with system-changing solutions for the world’s most urgent social problems. Since its founding over 25 years ago, Ashoka has provided start-up financing, professional support services, and connections to a global network of more than 2,000 leading social entrepreneurs - elected as Ashoka Fellows - in 70 countries.
Ashoka’s China mission is to support leading Chinese social entrepreneurs, promote social innovation in China, and foster cooperation and exchange between Chinese and global social entrepreneurs. The seminar is an opportunity for the foreign business community to learn more about participating in the Ashoka Support Network (ASN).
Jack’s intro:
Jack Sim was born in 1957 in Singapore. Entrepreneurial and creative as a child, Jack later developed his own successful construction business, and credits his business success to the need to devise creative solutions. In 2001, when Jack had enough money in the bank to retire, he followed his motto of “Live a Useful Life”, and started asking himself probing questions. Couldn’t he be doing more for society, finding a more beneficial outlet for his creativity and rebellious nature? At the time, public debate over the cleanliness of Singapore’s toilets was daily news. That was when Jack found his calling, a calling that in time led to his being awarded the Schwab Foundation Social Entrepreneur of the Year in 2001, and elected as an Ashoka Fellow in 2007.
