The term "Internet of Things" (or ‘IoT’) has come to describe the increasing number of technologies and research disciplines that promise to enable the Internet to reach out into the real world of physical objects.
Companies ranging from Tech giants to small start-ups are touting the possibility of interconnecting people and objects – be it smartphones, tablets, cars, buildings, refrigerators, medical devices - to create an internet of things. From desktop internet to mobile internet - the next step is enabling us to communicate with a wider array of objects directly, or enabling them to bypass people altogether and communicate directly with each other.
The development and widespread use of technologies like RFID, short-range wireless communications, and sensor networks are increasingly bringing the Internet of Things into commercial use. An exciting future that links the internet even more closely with the physical world promises to reshape the way we live, work and play.
