The European Chamber is delighted to invite you to participate in a trip to
Shanghai Lingang New City.
Organised by the European Chamber Logistics and Maritime Working Groups
Lingang New City, 临港新城 in Chinese, is a planned city in the Pudong district of Shanghai, strategically located near Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Yang Shan Deep Water Port. Construction of the city began in 2003 and is scheduled to be completed in 2020.
Lingang is being built on an island at the entrance of Hangzhou Bay, connected to the main city centre by Dong Hai Bridge. About 27.5km from the city’s Lu Chao Gang area in Nan Hui District, the city is poised to play an important part in the Northeast Asian shipping industry, particularly with its proximity to Yang Shan Deep Water Port, which became fully operational six years ago.
The city will be divided into five functional parts: the main city, heavy equipment industry area, logistics area, main industry area and a multi-purpose area. The main city area will house the financial, business, education, travel, leisure and residential sectors, with the initial residential population estimated at 350,000 and the developed area measuring 66km². Upon its completion, Lingang will boast capabilities in five types of transportation, including shipping, air, highway and railway, and will serve as a platform for five industrial manufacturing bases: automobiles, heavy equipment, logistics equipment, aviation equipment and photo-electric equipment. Preferential policies will apply and plans include free trade zones and export processing zones.
The Shanghai Lingang New City Administrative Committee aims to make the city the new Shanghai economy springboard. As Shanghai Vice-Mayor Yang Xiong states, “Lingang New City is not a general development zone. It is a modern city that will be supported by strong industries and will be a key link in the operations of Shanghai’s two main commerce checkpoints.”
