The European Union Chamber of Commerce in China is delighted to invite you to the 2nd Agri-Business Forum, organized by China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), UNESCO-CHIC Harmony, and co-organized by China Agriculture Industry Chamber of Commerce (CAICC).
Global agriculture is expected to enter a golden age of development in the coming decade - On the one hand, after experiencing a shortage of agro products and then a period of basic supply-demand equilibrium, agriculture is now undergoing a widespread transition from small-scale farming to large-scale farming that features a high level of prosperity, openness and competition. On the other hand, in response to a trend of counter-urbanization, agriculture in suburbs and certain villages boasting “idyllic charm and beautiful sceneries” is beginning to show characteristics of a service industry. Although agriculture is traditionally a food-producing industry, it has radiated and will continue to radiate from its border outwards into biology, energy, and even service industries. A golden decade of agricultural development also means a golden decade of agricultural investment. With surging capital inflows into the agricultural industry for high added value, large market share and strong pricing power, intensive competition along the whole industry chain will accelerate the modernization of agriculture and boost the comparative effectiveness of agricultural production. In this sense, agriculture has the potential to evolve into a new sunrise industry that will play a part in driving social progress. Meanwhile, the wide adoption of monopolistic technologies (e.g., genetic modification technologies) and the industrialization of bio-energy will aggravate people’s concerns over food safety, grain security, the “weaponization” of farm products, and the vulnerability of small-scale farming. Huge business opportunities may lie in the process of preventing and managing agricultural crises.
As global agriculture is set to undergo its second revolution, China’s agricultural development relies heavily on the active participation of business elites and the cultivation of talents for Chinese agribusinesses. The 2nd China Agribusiness Forum 2013 will bring together a group of senior government officials, prominent industry leaders, and agricultural experts to share their insights and offer suggestions for China’s agricultural development.
