Tianjin, a modern coastal city in northern China, is home to 12 million people. This 3.5-hour morning tour of Tianjin will provide a panoramic introduction to the past 100 years of history, which occupies a central place in modern Chinese memory. See Tianjin as seen by Sun Yat-sen, Eric Liddell, Herbert Hoover and many others. Learn about the foreign businessmen, Chinese officials, diplomats and soldiers who shaped the city (and China) and made Tianjin home. Visit the sites where they lived, worked, worshiped and played.
The tour will be led by Douglas Red. General Manager and Tour Impresario. With three decades in China and Asia, a banking career, a degree in Asian Studies and fluent in the Mandarin language, Doug will take you on an experience that combines place, story, history and passion. He will help you discover a China and a Tianjin that lies just beyond the borders of your imagination.
We will start from the west end of the Liberation Bridge (Jie Fang Qiao) and walk through the old French and British financial neighborhoods, visit the Astor Hotel, Xiao Bai Lou Area, then enjoy lunch at Qing Wang Fu, a historic mansion constructed in 1922 as a private residence for the last head eunuch of the Forbidden City in the old English neighborhood.
After lunch, you could enjoy a relaxed tour of the famous Wu Da Dao (Five Avenues area), which is a high-end residential area created in the historic British area of Tianjin on river silt dredged from the Hai He in the early 20th century. Capital from warlords and princes was invested in the construction of mansions of European flavor that populate the district. Most of the homes and buildings date back to the 1920s and 1930s.
