--Henry A. Kissinger
"[T]imely and highly readable . . . With copious data and not a few anecdotes of his own experience, Shambaugh lays out systematically the case that China's reach, while undeniably global, is almost universally shallow."
--Global Policy Journal
"The argument of China Goes Global is made forcefully, systematically and with plenty of evidence. It marshals information and research in a way that is valuable - and often fascinating."
--Financial Times
About the book
In China Goes Global, David Shambaugh—a leading expert in Chinese studies with more than three decades of experience in China-watching—offers a comprehensive account of China’s prominence in the global arena. Assessing China’s activities all across the world and along six different dimensions—perceptual, diplomatic, global governance, economic, cultural, and strategic—Shambaugh argues that China lacks influence in most international domains and is not the kind of challenge to global order and the United States that many argue it is.
He demonstrates China’s ambition by pointing to its growing military power and presence in diplomatic affairs, as well as its increasing cultural influence and the large role it plays in commercialism across the world. In spite of its astronomic growth, however, Shambaugh argues that China’s influence is still more broad than deep and that it lacks the influence attributed to a major world power. Instead, it is a “partial power.”
This balanced and well-researched book, written by one of the most respected authorities on China, is a necessary read for anyone interested in the various aspects of growing Chinese global power.
