In China Goes Global, David Shambaugh—a leading expert in Chinese studies with more than three decades of experience in China-watching—offers a comprehensive account of China’s prominence in the global arena. Assessing China’s activities all across the world and along six different dimensions—perceptual, diplomatic, global governance, economic, cultural, and strategic—Shambaugh argues that China lacks influence in most international domains and is not the kind of challenge to global order and the United States that many argue it is.
He demonstrates China’s ambition by pointing to its growing military power and presence in diplomatic affairs, as well as its increasing cultural influence and the large role it plays in commercialism across the world. In spite of its astronomic growth, however, Shambaugh argues that China’s influence is still more broad than deep and that it lacks the influence attributed to a major world power. Mr. David Shambaugh
David Shambaugh, Professor of Political Science and International Affairs & Director of the China Policy Program at George Washington University. He is also Nonresident Senior Fellow of the Foreign Policy Studies Program at the Brookings Institution. Professor Shambaugh is a recognized international authority and author on China. His most recent books include Charting China's Future: Domestic & International Challenges; China's Communist Party: Atrophy and Adaptation; International Politics of Asia; and Power Shift: China and Asia's New Dynamics. He also previously served as Editor of The China Quarterly.
Mr. James Miles
James Miles has been The Economist's bureau chief in Beijing since 2001. Before that, he held many positions with the BBC, including Beijing Bureau Chief for BBC News and Current Affairs, 1988 to 1994, Hong Kong Correspondent, BBC World Service, 1995 to 1997 and Senior Chinese Affairs Analyst, BBC News London, 1997 to 2000. James has been interviewed on CNN, Channel 4 evening news, BBC One Ten O'Clock News, BBC Radio 4 'Today', BBC Radio 5 Live evening news and ITV evening news, amongst others. He has written several special reports for The Economist on China and Taiwan.
