Event review
Agenda 1. Discussion on the current graduates' quality and the responsibilities of both universities and enterprises on education 2. European Chamber's proposal on cooperation of universities and companies 3. Experience sharing on the solution to the problem by some companies Discussion Points
College graduates are very important human resources in the market. In recent years, as the universities in China have been continually increasing their enrollment, both graduates and enterprises are under heavy pressure - enterprises can't employ the right person they want while about half of graduates can't get proper jobs. Around this hot issue, HR managers from foreign enterprises, talent hunters and related personnel from key universities of Chengdu had a heated discussion, trying to find some practical and feasible ways to solve the dilemma.
Views from the companies:
1. The fresh graduates can neither evaluate themselves objectively or accurately nor clearly sketch out their career plan, so that they change their jobs within one or two years after graduation, which causes a great loss to enterprises.
2. Poor English or language ability and lack of work experience are a great obstacle for the graduates to perform well in the job.
3. There is a big gap in the practical ability and maturity between the inland graduates and overseas students when recruiting new staff.
Therefore, it is universities’ responsibility to improve their education system, so as to train more generalists.
Views from key universities of Chengdu:
1. Changing the education system is not easy in the short term, but the universities are experimenting some reforms like selecting some excellent students to be teaching assistants and giving the fresh graduates career guidance.
2. Considering the Chinese national situation and limited education budget, it is impossible to educate students completely according to the western mode.
3. It is mostly the universities’ duty to educate more qualified generalists, but enterprises should also get involved in training and tutoring fresh graduates in their personal development.
At the meeting, European Chamber proposed that intern system should be adopted during the college years, in which students can not only put their knowledge into practice but also cumulate much experience and learn what enterprise is and how to adapt to the society. Thus, after graduation, they can more easily find a proper job, saving time and energy for themselves and cost for enterprises as well. Meanwhile, enterprises should have more involvement in course programming, teaching and career tutoring. They can also establish their own talent database and train more qualified graduates for themselves through the intern system, contributing to the improvement of general quality of graduates, and realizing their social responsibility.
The successful meeting has laid a solid foundation for the next forum which will draw more HR people, educators and even education ministry to the roundtable to further discuss the problem and find more feasible and effective ways to strengthening cooperation between universities and enterprises in the near future.
