On December 24,2006, the second reading of the draft Labour Contract Law has been reviewed by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. Compared with the first draft submitted in December 2005, the second one has following substantial differences: adding a provision that fixed-term contracts may be extended only once; restoring termination grounds when employees on fixed-term contracts may be terminated; eliminating restrictions on non-compete covenants; removing the link between job position and permitted length of probation period; and adding new chapters on collective contract and part-time employees. Final Version of Labour Contract Law will possibly be approved at a full session of the NPC in March 2007 after only limited revisions to the second draft.
