The Working Group will have the pleasure of inviting Mr David Mahon, Managing Director of Mahon China Investment Ltd who will give a presentation on ‘The volatile history of loss and reward in foreign private equity in China over the last 20 years, the transformation of Chinese F&B/agricultural sectors in the face of excessive food safety crisis and increasingly sophisticated consumers, and investment trends for both over the next five years.’
Since 1990, there have been numerous waves of foreign private equity investments in China. Most have appeared to perform badly until the middle of last decade. Successes have come from those private equity firms, both foreign and domestic, that have followed non-traditional strategies. In the future, in a slower but deeper and more complex Chinese economy where regulation and law is likely to be more firmly applied, private equity investors will face new and varied challenges in selecting the right sectors and individual investments.
