SME Seminar on Sourcing : Practical Case Studies
Sourcing and Procurement in China is a crucial aspect both in the everyday work of companies and in the China strategies that will be developed and rolled out over the coming years. Following on from our seminar in February, the Chamber sees the need to continue to provide information and support in this area. To that effect the Chamber is delighted to have two case studies from different industries by SMEs, about SMEs, for SMEs. This seminar will give companies first-hand practical experience on how SMEs are navigating the tricky path of sourcing in China.
Expect the topics to include: Sourcing Needs, Evaluating suppliers, Strategy, Problems/Solutions, HR in Sourcing, Quality control - certification, Protecting your IP, Logistics - delivery - lead times, The future, Best Practice and more.
Case Studies will be delivered by the following:
Ricardo Ebri, General Manager, Fermax
Fermax manufacture, distribute and trade in audio and video door entry systems, access control and intercom systems. Ricardo will share some of his company's ideas and best practice as they source the components needed for their manufacturing process in China.
David Heap, Chairman and Chief Executive, Virtual Village
Virtual Village sources consumer products in China which it then sells online all over the world. David has extensive global corporate experience and will be happy to share his ideas and experiences at the seminar. For his full bio click here

SME Breakfast Seminar- Sourcing & Procurement
The European Chamber Shanghai held a SME Seminar on Sourcing & Procurement, presenting two SME company case studies.
The first case study was on Fermax, a manufacturer of audio and video door entry systems and intercom systems. Ricardo Ebri, General Manager covered Fermax’s progression into the Chinese Market, business objectives for China and their Sourcing v Procurement methodology. He described the factors that affect the buyer’s and supplier’s negotiation power and the company’s sourcing v procurement process. He also covered risk management strategies in place to maintain its high quality products and service, such as its strict internal control policies, ERP system, IP and supplier screening.
David Heap, Entrepreneur and CEO of Virtual Village, a start up Online Retailer gave a contrasting perspective of his company’s sourcing and procurement methods. He gave an informative account of his experiences coming into the Chinese market, highlighting that that compared with local companies there are still comparatively few Western SMEs as WFOEs here. Virtual Village, in the business of accessories, has a very broad product range which contained many sourcing challenges such as sample orders, quality control, , IP concerns, and establishing good ‘guanxi’ with suppliers.
