Supplier Development - A Comprehensive Assessment
Building a relationship with local suppliers can be crucial to the success of an operation anywhere in the world. China offers it’s own unique set of issues and solutions with local suppliers. European companies now need to consider structured and measurable ways of developing suppliers to meet their needs. Such strategies should also direct willing and able local suppliers to develop their quality and effeciency.
The European Chamber Trade & Distribution Working Group presents the comprehensive event on ‘Supplier Development’. Four speakers from four top organisations, offering four complimentary aspects to give you as comprehensive an understanding of supplier development as one morning can offer.
Professor Linda G. Sprague, Professor of Manufacturing & Operations Management, CEIBS
Prof Sprague will draw from her extensive research in the role of SMMs (Small-to Medium-sized Manufacturers) in larger firms' supply chains and how this may affect their growth potential. She will show that it is possible to identify four sets of characteristics of SMMs which can be related to "growth potential" (defined as sales growth over a 3 to 5 year period).

Many IP infringements in China result from a leak in the company's own supply chain. There are steps which companies can, and should, be taking in China to protect themselves from this risk to their IP including: (i) Signing tight agreements with suppliers; (ii) Proactive monitoring and auditing of the supply chain - how many links is it; (iii) Training their suppliers on their expectations regarding IP (eg waste management procedures, protection of moulds and specifications); and (iv) Taking steps post-production to ensure suppliers do not continue to manufacture products using the company's IP.
Susan He, Senior Manager, Supplier Logistics Development, China Sourcing Group, Philips Lighting
Ms He's presentation will cover Philips' own 'Supplier Logistics Development Program'. She will explain why Philips needs this program, what this program is all about and how the methodology is applied. Ms. He will also discuss the critical success factors of its implementation.

"Lean supply - integration of Chinese suppliers in the Bosch Production System worldwide"
By introducing lean mangement, Mr. Rau will highlight how Bosch follows a holistic approach to improve quality, delivery performance and cost competiviness of our suppliers at the same time.

Supplier Development Seminar
The European Chamber in Shanghai held a Supplier Development Seminar on ‘How building supplier’s capability can benefit your company.’ There were four speakers who presented as in order below.

Drawing from her extensive research, Dr. Sprague presented on the role of SMMs (Small-to Medium-sized Manufacturers) in larger firms' supply chains and their growth potential in China. She identified four sets of characteristics of SMMs, in relation to their growth potential looking at how focused they were marketing, the product side or solutions capability for customers. The three essential determinants of supplier development were to focus on quality, delivery and cost. The types of SMMs in China were described as start-ups that were in need of development, joint ventures, and the remnants of the State Owned Enterprises.

Chris Bailey talked about the many IP infringements in China result from a leak in the company's own supply chain. He stressed the importance of registering IP early on and creating stringent terms and conditions in supplier agreement/contracts. He also mentioned training/educating suppliers on IP, and maintaining IP checks and controls such as audits to mitigate problems in the future.

Ms He's presentation covered Philips' own 'Supplier Logistics Development Program'. She explained why Philips needed this program, and what the program was all about and its objectives. She described how the methodology was applied such as by carrying out onsite supplier assessments, reviewing and measuring the systems already in place using KPIs and process mapping. Ms. He also discussed the critical success factors of its implementation.

In his presentation on "Lean supply - integration of Chinese suppliers in the Bosch Production System worldwide," Mr. Rau explained Bosch’s ‘lean philosophy’ in supply chain management. He stressed the importance of cost competitiveness, improving quality and delivery performance to achieve the ultimate goal of customer satisfaction. He described the Bosch principles that were integrated to achieve ‘lean management,’ and value streaming which was to teach and improve management capability and improve logistics options.
