SME Breakfast Seminar on Trade Fairs and Exhibitions in China
The European Chamber held a SME Breakfast Seminar on Trade Fairs and Exhibitions in China on Friday, 25th May.
Josephine Lee, Vice- President of Reed Exhibitions East China, presented on Techniques and tips for Exhibition success. Attending fairs, Ms. Lee said, is about finding new customers in new markets, finding new and potentially rewarding partners and also keeping an eye on competitors. She also explained the considerations at the different phases of exhibition preparation such as pre-show budgeting, on-site screening questions, and post-show follow up on sales leads. Josephine also covered setting clear objectives while attending fairs, booth design and tips on IP protection such as early pre-registration of IP and investigating competitors.

Georgia Chiu, Associate at Lovells Law Firm.
Ms Chiu, an experienced IP lawyer, shared with us IP Best Practice at Trade Fairs and Exhibitions. She covered common problems encountered at trade fairs/exhibitions, and the basis of IPR protection such as early protection of rights, and taking proactive action by identifying infringers and lodging complaints. She also stressed the need for proper documentation in order to submit a complaint to the complaint office, and that the registration of rights could take a long time as actual certification is required from overseas offices. Ms. Chiu also described what is deemed infringement ie. the sale and not just the display of a product, and also how to collect evidence aswell as follow up actions after the trade fair such as registration with the Customs General to prevent infringing products export overseas. The key message was to do your homework, proactive action, and follow up to lower IP infringement.
