The European Union Chamber of Commerce in China is pleased to invite you to the presentation of the Goldman Sachs report China's Environment: Big Issues, Accelerating Effort, Ample Opportunities. Afterwards, a panel discussion will address the findings of the report, the (potential) market access issues as well as legal and regulatory issues that foreign environment companies are being faced with or may be facing, and the business impact of the recently revised environmental protection law.
The report, released on 13 July 2015, says that unprecedented growth has led to record levels of pollution in China’s air, water and soil. 60% of the country’s groundwater is unfit for human consumption and 19% of its arable land exceeds the national pollution standards.
Calls to fight pollution have grown louder across China. The report expects China to invest 2% of its annual GDP in 2016-2020 in the environmental industry, which would imply a total investment of RMB 8.2 trillion in 2016-2020, 60% higher than 2011-2015. Soil remediation, solid waste and wastewater treatment are said to have the biggest growth potential.

Speakers
Mr. Julian Zhu
Mr. Julian Zhu is the Co-Head of China Equity Research and Co-business Unit Leader of the Asia-Pacific Basic Resources team at Goldman Sachs. Julian also heads China commodities and environmental services research with more than twelve years of experience. He joined Goldman Sachs as a Managing Director in 2010. Previously he worked at Deutsche Bank, where he was the regional head of Asia metals and mining research. Before that, he worked for HSBC’s China Equity Capital Markets team. Julian holds a Master of Business Administration from Fudan University.
Mr. Anders Hove
Mr. Anders Hove is Associate Director of Research at the Paulson Institute. Based in Beijing, he guides the Institute’s research work related to China air quality and climate change, developing insights related to policy, market and technology solutions. He also provides research support for other Institute programs. Hove began his career as an energy policy analyst with the Rand Corporation in Washington, DC, then performed equity research in the electric utilities and oil services sectors with Deutsche Bank AG and Jefferies and Co. Hove has both a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and he is a Chartered Financial Analyst.
Ms. Wensheng Wu
Wensheng WU is the Environmental Protection Manager at BASF Greater China. She has over 25 years of experience in chemical engineering and environmental protection. Early in her career, she had also taken roles as project leaders for several BASF projects in the Asia-Pacific region. Throughout her career, Wensheng has taken a proactive role in promoting environmentally friendly and energy saving operations. She holds a Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering from the East China University of Science and Technology.
Mr. Gianluca Ghiara
Gianluca is the Key Expert for the EU Project Europe-China Eco-Cities Link and Advisor at GIZ. In the past, he was Vice Chair for the Renewable Energy and Environment WG at the European Chamber and he has acted as senior expert on environment and sustainability-related topics for the EU SME Centre.
