As a record number of COVID-19 cases spread around the world, things are slowly going back to normal in China. Amid a gradual recovery in production and general business, uncertainties still remain. While the Chinese government has announced several policies aimed at supporting businesses, the full extent of the responses from the government at central and local levels, and speed of recovery from the pandemic in the months to come are yet to be seen.

Among all the difficulties, Government Affairs (GA) teams in multinationals are facing with multiple challenges as well, especially the lack of timely understanding in policies. The reason behind might be the lack of transparency of policy-making process and the discrepancy of Eastern and Western culture. A good and in-depth understanding in policies and their trend is key to corporate operations on daily basis. How to properly avoid misunderstanding and reduce uncertainty is the target of an excellent GA team.

To support you all to cope with the challenge, European Chamber GA Forum is delighted to invite a distinguished speaker and expert, Mr Yuan Haiying, President and Founder of Yuan Associates, to give us a presentation on how should GA team navigate your enterprise on the right track, especially amid COVID-19 pandemic outbreak period. During the Forum meeting, we are going to have the annual election on new Chair and Vice Chair in 2020-2021 tenure.

In today's technology-rich environment, companies increasingly get involved in technology licensing and recognize the value of data as a business asset that should be protected and can be exploited through licensing to other parties for more synergy.

Companies therefore can encounter a range of agreements that implicate the protection and treatment of technology, data and related intellectual property (IP) rights. Where one party is seeking to exploit a software, a data feed or has developed a database it wishes to license, data and IP issues may be the specific focus of a transaction. However, those issues also arise as an ancillary consideration in other licenses and commercial transactions, e.g. technology services arrangements or as capital contribution for joint ventures.

Banking & Securities Chairs Election

The Banking & Securities Working Group will hold Chair elections on March 30.

The Chairperson and Vice Chairs play a crucial role in driving the Working Group, including a leading role in the drafting of the annual Position Paper, in communicating key messages to Chinese and European government authorities, and in steering activities of the Working Group. The ideal Chair and Vice Chair is a senior industry representative with relevant expertise and government contacts who has the time and willingness to support the Working Group for 12 months. Previous participation in the Working Group is essential. Before applying for the position of Chair or Vice Chair, we recommend that you obtain approval from your company.

The maximum duration of the Chairperson and Vice Chairperson position is three consecutive years. Only candidates who are physically based in China are eligible to run for Chair or Vice Chair positions.

IPR Working Group Meeting: Brand Protection Strategies in China

A strong brand is instrumental in winning new customers when entering China’s market. As lot of time and money is spent on building brand reputation, it can be damaging to SMEs if someone else started to sell their products under the same brand name. Thus, brand protection is the key to success on China’s market. Successful protection, however, requires a comprehensive strategy, including registering IP such as trademarks, monitoring the market and taking action when spotting infringements.

Businesses in China have mobilized quickly to address critical priorities like employee wellbeing and business continuity during the acute phase of the COVID-19 crisis. For many, the CSR function has been critically important in working closely alongside other key functions to ensure coordination of initiatives to both mitigate negative impact to the company and to maximize support to employees and other important stakeholders. As the situation continues to evolve and move beyond immediate crisis response, the focus of the CSR function needs to shift to improving preparedness, prevention, and organizational resilience. In this webinar, we will explore what critical steps and issues CSR practitioners need to consider next, to ensure their companies are capturing and acting on “lessons learned”.
