Over the last 40 years, China has witnessed progressive liberalisation of its capital markets and its contribution to the world economy, with China now being the world’s second largest economy. China’s capital markets have continued to develop and open up at an unprecedented pace. Meanwhile, a significant step taken in 2018 to further open up the capital markets was allowing foreign institutional investors in the CIBM to have access to onshore FX risk hedging arrangements.
Since 1978, the Chinese capital market has stood at the forefront of China's economic reform and development. Developing open and mature capital markets is still essential to supporting China’s economic growth going forward and should therefore be a top priority for both the Chinese leadership and market regulators.
While China has come a long way in 40 years – and made many significant developments in 2018 alone– further and accelerated reform is needed to support China’s transition from a phase of rapid growth to a new stage of high-quality development. Access for foreign firms is still limited. A comprehensive analysis of the existing problems and challenges in China's capital market is a prerequisite for formulating future development strategies and a basis for looking forward to future development prospects.
The Financial Services Conference 2019 will discuss the status and overview of China's capital markets, assess the impact of recent events and recommend how to reconcile objectives for investors and market players.
