Dear R&D Working Group Members,
Hope you and your family are doing well during this critical time!
The European Chamber is pleased to invite you to the next Research & Development Working Group Meeting/ 2020-2021 Chair elections, which will be held on Thursday, 19th March, from 16:00 to 17:30 via the digital platform Zoom. Only Research & Development Working Group members who had their confirmed registration for this meeting will have the right to vote online, with one vote per company. Online voting instructions and online meeting link will be sent via email to individual attendees prior to the meeting.
In the year of 2019, we have seen edging technologies: 5G, AI, IOT, semiconductor, smart city, getting more public attention and exposure. This is to our advantage to increase our presence in front of relevant government departments and draw their attention to help us realize the demands we have to improve the research and development industry environment. The WG meeting will be composed of a review of last year's work done by the working group, the 2020-2021 Chair elections and a 2020 Working Plan Discussion.
Tentative Agenda
- Opening Remarks by Zhonghua XU, 2019-2020 Chair of the R&D WG
- Review of WG works in 2019 by the WG coordinator
- 2020-2021 Chair Elections and Online Voting
- 2020 Working Plan Discussion on:
1) Corporate status share during the COVID-19 outbreak
2) Trending topics and priorities of the sector such as 5G, AI, IOT, semiconductor, smart city, plastic recycling, carbon emission reduction, energy utilization, IPR issues, researcher mobility…etc.
3) 2020-2021 Position Paper Key Recommendation Discussion based on the last year Position Paper (see attached);
During this meeting we will hold our 2020-2021 chair elections. Working Group members interested in running for this year’s Chair elections, should take notice of the following:
Roles and Responsibilities
The Chairperson and Vice Chairs play a crucial role in driving the Working Group, including a leadership role in the drafting of the Position Paper, communicating key messages to Chinese and European government authorities and steering Working Group meetings. The desired characteristics of a Chair and Vice Chairs are a senior industry representative with relevant expertise and government contacts who has the time and willingness to support the Working Group. Previous participation in the Working Group is essential. Before applying for the position of Chair or Vice-chair, we recommend that you obtain approval from your company.
The maximum duration of Chairperson or Vice Chairperson of a Group is three consecutive years. Candidates are only eligible for Chair or Vice Chair positions if he/she is physically based in China.
The R&D Working Group is going to elect one Chairperson and two Vice-Chairpersons, in Shanghai.
The Chairs and Vice-Chairs should represent different sectors and issues, therefor we encourage employees across industries as well as candidates both of Regulatory Affairs and Government Affairs background to apply for elections. If you are interested in the positions of Chair or Vice Chair, please read the attached Starter Kit for Chairs and submit the following information to me:
- Resume/CV
- Motivation letter on why you wish to be elected Chair or Vice Chair, including:

- how your background and experience match the role
- the goals you have for the R&D working group over the following 12 months
- how you intend to utilise or share professional resources for the benefit of the Working Group
