In our second conversation of this series, Markus HERRMANN, Co-Founder and Managing Director, China Macro Group (CMG); (Advisory) Board Member stars and SCCC, Zurich, will be talking to BAI Chong-En, Mansfield Freeman Chair Professor; Dean, School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University, Beijing.
At last year’s consequential 20th Party Congress, CCP General Secretary Xi Jinping reiterated that “development is our Party’s top priority in governing and rejuvenating China”, at the same time the party – against the backdrop of a confluence of domestic and international challenges – dropped the notion of “important period of strategic opportunity”, now characterizing it as a “period of development in which strategic opportunities, risks and challenges exist at the same time”. To address this new situation, the CCP leadership vows to better balance supply-side with demand-side policies and strengthen domestic demand going forward. As a result, in December, the CCP Central Committee together with the State Council jointly issued the Strategic Plan for Expanding Domestic Demand 2022 – 2035, a new economic blueprint guiding “high-quality development” in the decade ahead. What drives this policy shift? What can we expect from the new government and especially the new economic leadership? What does the government reshuffling mean for economic work? And how likely can China still achieve the goal to double 2020 GDP per capita by 2035?
Kindly note: All webinars of this series are held under Chatham House Rules and will not be recorded.
Stars Webinar series – "Staying in Dialogue with China":
With the decision to drop the strict Covid measures announced by China’s National Health Commission on 7th December 2022, and travel in and out of the country facilitated again, this year shall also bring to an end a 3-year spell for the Stein am Rhein Symposium (stars) without holding a China symposium. Until then, and in light of the current infection waves on the ground as well as the upcoming ‘Two Sessions’ in March, we decided to follow-up on last year’s successful execution of the “Staying in Dialogue with China” webinar series with a new edition for 2023. This 2nd edition will bring you six webinars with China-based experts concentrated on the H1, between February and June 2023 – before we expect international travel into China to more significantly recover. In that, we are happy to cooperate with the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China (EUCCC), the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), the Swiss-Chinese Chamber of Commerce (SCCC), the Danish-Chinese Business Forum (DCBF), SwissCham China, the Danish Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and China Netzwerk Baden-Württemberg (CNBW) as well as with Caixin Global as media partner and the China Macro Group as knowledge partner. You can find an overview of the planned webinars here.
