On 11th December 2001, China entered the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the China market has been opening since then. Over the years, the China market sees lots of companies and corporations from around the world explore their business potential and flourish here. The Covid-19 pandemic had a significant impact on companies’ supply chain management and its resilience and agility. As such, businesses, no matter the size, have had to consider and plan resilient supply chains and put effort into developing multiple supply chain possibilities.
The China market has experienced three significant waves of international expansion, each characterised by distinct strategies and objectives tailored to the evolving global business environment. Initially, from 2001 to 2008, Chinese companies focused on exporting products and engaging in OEM/ODM manufacturing due to labour cost advantages. The second wave, from 2008 to 2016, saw companies accumulating capital and moving beyond being mere global manufacturers to engaging in cross-border mergers and acquisitions to enhance their core capabilities and minimise production costs. The most recent wave, starting in 2016, has been driven by China's vast market, leading to industry agglomeration and the expansion of capabilities in core technologies, supply chain management, and innovative business models, transitioning from product exportation to industry exportation. This period has also emphasised the importance of adapting supply chain models for long-term global integration, with a focus on innovation, risk diversification, and cooperative international relationships.
Enterprises around the world are looking for a variety of supply chain options and Chinese companies are also preparing for their overseas market to echo the Belt and Road Initiative launched by China in 2013. It has been over 10 years since the first batch of companies started exploring the overseas market as part of this initiative and while some have had success, others have had to drop out from the market. Many successful cases can be referred to for lessons learned.
Getting insights into developing overseas business and foreseeing the potential risks are essential next steps in planning to develop your business for overseas markets. Join us on 9th July to hear from industry insiders and experienced professional on their experiences of exploring overseas markets from local and international perspectives.
