The European Union Chamber of Commerce South China Chapter is delighted to invite you to the launch event of its European Business in China Position Paper 2024/2025 (Position Paper 2024/2025), on 17th October 2024.
This publication is the culmination of six months dedicated work by our 50 working groups, sub-working groups, desks and for a, compiling a comprehensive summary of the challenges faced by European companies operating in China. It also provides more than 1,000 constructive recommendations to the Chinese government on how to they can be resolved. In short, it provides a blueprint for rebuilding business confidence in the Chinese market and restoring it as the preferred destination for global investment.

Mr. Péter Várfi
Mr. Péter Várfi
Mr. Péter Várfi, born on 29 November 1984 in Mezőtúr, Hungary, has established a prominent career in international diplomacy, trade, and communications, with a focus on fostering Hungary’s diplomatic and economic relationships in Asia. His experience and educational background have enabled him to excel in various roles across multiple countries, particularly in China and Indonesia.
Since 2021, Mr. Várfi has been serving as the Consul General at the Consulate General of Hungary in Guangzhou, China. In this position, he is responsible for promoting Hungary’s economic and cultural interests in Southern China, and strengthening bilateral relations between Hungary and China.
Before his appointment in Guangzhou, Mr. Várfi held the role of Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Hungary in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 2018 to 2021. In this capacity, he played a key role in managing diplomatic relations between Hungary and Indonesia, supporting high-level diplomatic dialogues, and ensuring the smooth functioning of the embassy’s operations.
From 2015 to 2018, Mr. Várfi was the Head of Trade and Investment at the Embassy of Hungary in Jakarta. During this period, he was instrumental in promoting Hungarian trade interests in Indonesia, facilitating business collaborations, and attracting investment opportunities that enhanced bilateral economic ties. His deep understanding of the regional market allowed him to successfully promote Hungary’s economic agenda.
From 2014 to 2015, Mr. Várfi was a Political Affairs, Public Relations, and Communications Advisor for the the Orosháza City Mayor’s Office and then for the Békés County Government Office.
In addition to his professional career, Mr. Várfi has a strong academic background. Between 2018 and 2021, he pursued a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Entrepreneurship at Open University Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur. This program provided him with advanced business knowledge and entrepreneurial skills, complementing his diplomatic and trade expertise.
Earlier, Mr. Várfi deepened his understanding of international relations and diplomacy by studying at Fudan University in Shanghai, China, from 2011 to 2014, which equipped him with a comprehensive understanding of global diplomacy and China’s growing role in international affairs.
Mr. Renátó Horváth
Mr. Renátó Horváth
Mr. Renátó Horváth, born on 29 October 1991 in Budapest, Hungary, has developed a career in international relations and commerce, with a particular focus on enhancing economic and diplomatic relations between Hungary and China.
In 2022, Mr. Horváth was appointed as the Commercial Consul at the Consulate General of Hungary in Guangzhou. In this role, he advances Hungary’s economic interests in Southern China, facilitates business connections, and represents Hungarian enterprises in a rapidly expanding international market.
Prior to this appointment, from 2019 to 2022, Mr. Horváth served as a Consular Administrator at the Consulate General of Hungary in Shanghai, where he was responsible for overseeing consular affairs.
Mr. Horváth holds a Master’s degree in International Business from Fudan University in Shanghai, obtained between 2017 and 2019. This academic background has provided him with a profound understanding of the Chinese market and international business practices, which has been invaluable in his subsequent diplomatic and commercial endeavors. Additionally, Mr. Horváth earned a Bachelor’s degree in International Economics from Budapest Business School in 2017.
Mr. Jens Eskelund
Mr. Jens Eskelund
Jens Eskelund was born in 1970 in Aarhus, Denmark. He holds an MA in philosophy and has studied at University of Aarhus and University of Texas at Austin. He has also pursued studies in Chinese at Renmin University in Beijing. Coming to Beijing as a student in 1998, Jens Eskelund began his career in China as Commercial Officer at the Danish Embassy to China before taking on a position in marketing for Maersk Line in Beijing in 2000. He has since held positions as General Manager for Public Affairs for Maersk Line in China and later Director of Public Affairs for North Asia before assuming his present role as Chief Representative for Maersk in the Greater China Area and North-East Asia. Primary focus areas comprise engaging government entities, institutions and trade associations on matters of policy, regulatory environment and business development on behalf of the companies within the Maersk Group.
Jens Eskelund is a former Chairman of the Danish Chamber of Commerce in China as well as the Vice President and Chair of Maritime Working Group of the European Chamber. Jens was elected as the President of European Chamber in May 2023.
Jens Eskelund is married and has two sons.
Mr. Klaus Zenkel
Mr. Klaus Zenkel
Born in Germany and graduated in Industrial Engineering. Until late 80's mainly remained in Germany near his hometown in Erlangen, where he had a position at Siemens Healthcare HQ.
From 1993 to 2006 he was based in Hongkong, Malaysia, Germany and China for several executive management positions within the Siemens Healthcare organization, one of which was Technical Director at Siemens Healthineers facility (SSMR), based in Shenzhen's Hi-Tech Industrial Park.
In 2006 start-up and developed from scratch the Shenzhen subsidiary of a Swiss Company, Imedco AG. Imedco is global player involved in the healthcare Industry, manufacturing MRI shielding solutions for hospitals and research institutions.
Involvement at European Chamber South China Chapter board since 2016. As an active board member of the European Chamber South China Chapter he holds the Chair of the board position since 2021. In the capacity as EU Chamber Vice President supports the member companies and meets with government officials on a regular basis to discuss the current economic and technological issues.
In March 2021 Klaus was elected as a Director of the Board at the Swiss Chamber in South China. He is also a member of the German Chamber in South China.
高志豪先生出生于德国埃朗根市,毕业于工业工程专业,曾于埃朗根市附近的西门子医疗就职至1980年代末。1993年至2006年,他在中国香港、马来西亚、德国和中国大陆担任西门子医疗的多个高层管理职位,包括位于深圳高新技术产业园区的西门子医疗(SSMR)技术总监。
2006年,高先生成立了瑞士公司益迈得可科技(Imedco AG)在深圳的子公司。益迈得可是全球医疗行业的重要参与者,为医院和研究机构提供核磁共振屏蔽方案。
2016年起,高先生加入中国欧盟商会华南分会,作为华南分会的董事会成员,并于2021年起担任董事会主席。他同时担任中国欧盟商会副主席,支持会员公司,并定期与政府官员会面,讨论当前的经济和技术问题。2021年3月,高先生当选为中国瑞士商会华南分会的董事会成员。他同时也是中国德国商会华南分会的成员。
Mr. Fabian Blake
Mr. Fabian Blake
Fabian Blake is a Belgian national who presently serves as the Managing Director of AMS Assembly Foshan, a Dutch-owned company that has been operating in the Pearl River Delta, providing manufacturing services in South China since 2003.
Having resided and worked in China since 2008, Fabian has accumulated 15 years of experience exclusively in South China. During this time, he has played a pivotal role in the operational development of major corporations like the ETEX Group. Additionally, he has successfully managed smaller Chinese business units specializing in engineering services, offering value-added solutions to European clientele.
AMS Group, under Fabian's leadership, currently boasts a workforce of 90 employees, with 80 of them based in our facilities located in Foshan and Shenzhen. The company is actively involved in the development, manufacturing, and assembly of hardware devices, primarily serving customers situated in Europe.
Furthermore, Fabian has also served as a Member of the Board of the Benelux Chamber of Commerce from 2013 to 2016. His extensive experience and dedication to the industry make him a valuable asset to both AMS Assembly Foshan and the broader business community.
Ms. Joanna Ye
Ms. Joanna Ye
Joanna is a Partner at Forvis Mazars, an international audit, tax and advisory firm established in 1945 with European roots. Nowadays she is leading Audit & Financial Advisory team in Southern China. Grew up in Shenzhen and worked there for 4 years at KPMG, she then joined Forvis Mazars in 2007.
With over 20 years of experience focusing on European enterprises, Joanna has extensive expertise in Sino-European activities as well as the best practices of business operations in China. In addition to development and delivering sizable audit projects across Asia, she is also responsible for cross-border M&A projects in Greater Bay Area. Her areas of expertise include, but not limited to, Manufacturing, Retail and Wholesale, Media & Advertising, and ranging from SMEs to MNCs.
She is fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (“FCCA”), a global leading professional accountancy body established in UK in 1904; and was nominated as a member of ACCA Steering Team in Southern China since 2019.
She is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the European Chamber of Commerce South China Chapter.
Ms. Daisy Yang
Ms. Daisy Yang
Daisy is an attorney at law with an focus on international corporate clients. Having lived in Tianjin, Shanghai, Hong Kong and currently in Shenzhen, she has gained extensive experience in corporate law, labor law, outbound and inbound investment, etc. She has helped numerous companies expand their businesses to China and overseas, as well as grow in the local markets.
Throughout her career, she has gained experience both in manufacturing sector and professional consulting industry. The combination of mixed backgrounds has allowed her to understand both sides and support her clients more efficiently.
She has been serving as the Chair of SME Forum of the European Chamber of Commerce South China Chapter since March 2023.
