The European Union Chamber of Commerce in China is delighted to announce the launch of the European Business in China Position Paper 2019/2020 publication. The Chamber will be holding a VIP Roundtable Breakfast for the Position Paper to celebrate yet another year of successful publication. In Shenzhen, the roundtable will be on 14th November.
For members closer to Guangzhou, please click here for the same event which will be held in Guangzhou on 12th November.
One of the biggest challenges facing European companies in China is the perpetuation of China’s ‘economic caste system’, which distinguishes companies by ownership, and favours state-owned over private and local over foreign. This has led to the emergence of inefficient SOEs, which are at the core of the China’s structural problems. A potential solution, a concept known as ‘competitive neutrality,’ has been gaining traction in China, given its successful implementation across OECD countries. This idea begins with the simple premise that government should not provide special treatment to any given enterprise. Embracing this idea, while also reinvigorating SOE reform, can begin to resolve some of the foundational problems that are limiting China’s development.
We hope you will join us for this event to discuss how your business may be impacted by potential reforms, learn about the key recommendations made in this year’s publication, and find out how Chinese governmental entities have received our comments. Apart from discussing how municipal and provincial governments have taken our recommendations, we will also consider how these proposals will impact you as they transform into new measures, policies, and reforms going forward.
Critical as some of the Position Paper’s recommendations may seem, all are given in an honest effort to improve China’s business environment and better represent the genuine sentiment of both domestic and foreign companies alike.
