2018 China (Guangdong)-Europe Investment Cooperation Conference & German Enterprises Invest In Guangdong Promotion Event is jointly hosted by the People’s Government of Guangdong Province, the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China (European Chamber) and the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce. The event is organised by the People’s Government of Shenzhen Municipality, the Department of Commerce of Guangdong Province, and China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Guangdong Committee.
This 2-day conference will bring together top European and Chinese leaders of politics and economics, with an aim to better synchronise the development of "Made in China 2025" and "European Industry 4.0" under the background of the upcoming Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area development. A series of activities, including an opening ceremony, presentations from European and Chinese officials, seminars, as well as B2B matching events, will be held.
Topics discussed at this event include intelligent manufacturing, biotech & health, environmental technology, and the launch of European Business in China Position Paper. In-field inspections to relevant cities and industrial parks will be followed up on the next day after the conference.
Due to the participation of high-level political leaders, we reserve the right to make changes to the agenda of the Business Summit. ID is required on the day to be granted admittance.

Mr. George Lau
Mr. George Lau
George Lau, General Manager of Products Accreditation and Certification Greater China, is responsible for Brand Protection at TÜV Rheinland, where he has worked for 10 years. Since 2011, Lau has held exchanges for authorities, e.g. AQSIQ, Shanghai Institute of Administrative Law, Hamburg Business Development Corporation, and manufacturers (e.g. Lenovo, Supor etc.) regarding EU certification regulations, risk management, receiving unanimous recognition. Previously, Lau worked as an analyst for ZTE Corporation. As a result of his performance regarding African market development – fulfilling Chinese central government’s mission – he was promoted directly to Assistant to the CEO. Since 2004, Lau has been studying the Chinese Communist Party, Chinese-foreign cultural differences, socialism with Chinese characteristics etc., to explore strategies of foreign companies in China. He believes that such knowledge is indispensable for multinationals developing in China. Lau is a German Chinese who immigrated to Germany at the age of 5. He is fluent in German, English, Cantonese, Mandarin, French and graduated from Konstanz University with magister juris in 2003.
Mr. Maarten Bijl
Mr. Maarten Bijl
Maarten Bijl (1977) was born and raised in the Netherlands, and he holds a MSc aerospace engineering from the Technical University of Delft and an Executive MBA degree of RSM business school. Maarten serves as the CEO of Guangzhou head quartered SHV Energy China since July 2016, which is the holding company for all Chinese LPG and LNG activities Of SHV Energy, the global leader in decentralized LPG solutions. Operating mainly under the Xiweigas brand and with circa CNY 3.5 billion revenues and 5000 employees it is one of the leading LPG players of Mainland China. In South China, Xiwei is the market leader in off grid energy retailing and works closely with the government to improve local air quality through cleaner transport solution such as hydrogen and Industrial coal to gas conversions. The 2018 impact Xiwei’s activities had on reducing local emissions is the equivalent of planting 295,000 pine trees and letting them grow for 25 years.
Maarten has served on the board of the European Chamber of South China since April 2019.
Before coming to China, Maarten worked in different countries in strategy, commercial and general management roles. He started his career in 2003 at TNT Express on the commercial side of global supply chains, which took him to China for the first time in 2004.
Mr. Jamie Rowlands
Mr. Jamie Rowlands
Jamie Rowlands is a partner and Chief Representative Officer of Gowling WLG's Guangzhou Representative Office. He is a UK qualified solicitor with over 16 years of experience enforcing and protecting clients' valuable intellectual property rights (in particular patents and brands), negotiating and advising on transactions with an intellectual property focus and drafting commercial agreements more generally. He is client focussed and always strives to get to the nub of an issue to deliver the most relevant and commercial advice.
In China, Jamie works with his team on both transactional and litigation services. He has very extensive experience of all aspects of the court system in Mainland China and understands the complexities and cultural challenges well.
His work has always been internationally-focussed and includes acting on complex global disputes and transactions involving parties from the UK, Europe, USA, Canada, China, Japan and Africa. He is first rate at managing large teams (including lawyers from different jurisdictions) to provide a cost effective and streamlined service for clients. Jamie combines in-depth technical expertise with broad sector experience; work includes acting for clients in healthcare, aviation, advanced manufacturing, finance and hi-tech sectors.
Mr. Samson Ho
Mr. Samson Ho
Samson has close to a decade of recruitment and management experience, with a proven track record in building high-performing teams. Previously, he was the Business Director of Hays Hong Kong and, subsequently, he was chosen to lead the Hays Shenzhen office. Currently, Samson leads the overall management of the Hays Shenzhen operations.
Samson primarily specialises in recruitment across operations management, sales and marketing and human resources. He is particularly skilled at helping small and medium-sized enterprises to develop their business by consistently recommending the right talent to suit their needs. In addition, Samson has helped many local enterprises to expand internationally; and vice versa, has helped foreign companies to find top quality talent to adapt the business to the local culture.
