The European Chamber is delighted to welcome Dr Yukon Huang, senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment and a former World Bank Director for China, advisor to the World Bank, ADB, AIIB and various governments and corporations, to share with participants his view on the upcoming Party Congress, based on his book “Cracking the China Conundrum: Why Conventional Economic Wisdom is wrong”, published in July 2017. Dr Huang is a leading expert on China-US relations and an 'A-list commentator' for the Financial Times on China.
Yukon Huang will highlight the reform challenges facing the 19th Party Congress. These include options for dealing with China’s debt problems, sustaining rapid growth, curtailing corruption, moderating trade and investment tensions with the West and coping with pressures for political liberalization. Many of the mainstream assumptions for addressing these issues are misguided and thus the related policy prescriptions are flawed.
