The European Union Chamber of Commerce in China is delighted to invite you to the Shanghai launch of the European Business in China Position Paper 2011/2012, taking place over lunch on 8th September. This year we are also happy to annouce that this event will be free for members.
This is the 12th edition of the annual publication that has grown in importance and stature to become a vital contribution to the on-going reform and market opening for businesses in China.
During the past year, despite some progress, many issues remain unresolved and additional concerns have arisen. The many examples in this publication illustrate the perception of European business that it is becoming increasingly challenging to operate in the Chinese market.
Drawing on the industry knowledge and expertise of the European Chamber’s 1,600 members, this year’s Position Paper presents Chinese and European policy makers with more than 600 key recommendations.
These recommendations focus on how business conditions for both Chinese and foreign companies can be improved and how European companies can contribute to help China shift from an investment and export-driven economy to a more balanced economic structure based on growing domestic consumption, energy efficiency and high-valued added goods and services.
The key messages of the Position Paper that will be covered at this event are:
1. The positive role European companies can play in helping China reach the goals of its 12th Five-Year Plan:
-Developing the service sector
-Enhancing environmentally-friendly and advanced technologies
-Encouraging Innovation
2. An overview of the key themes of recommendations to Chinese policymakers:
-Increasing Market Access
-Enhancing Transparency & Predictability in Legislation
-Improving Regulatory Efficiency
-Encouraging Innovation through Intellectual Property Rights Protection
3. Recommendations to both European and Chinese governments on EU-China commercial relations and the prospects for a bilateral investment treaty
At this lunch event, Mr. Piter de Jong, Vice President of the European Chamber, will present a summary of the key issues in this year’s Position Paper. Thierry Laurent, Vice Chair European Chamber Shanghai Board will elaborate on Shanghai-specific issues within the publication. Some representatives of the European Chamber’s Working Groups and Forums will also be on hand to answer specific questions related to their industries.
